My Sunset Challenge Collaboration with @shaniabeyondthesky_

Recently, I did a collaboration with one of my classmates, Shania (@shaniabeyondthesky_), a weather girl who provides online daily weather forecasts via Instagram and Youtube. We wanted to try combining our interests into content and it became a concept where Art meets Weather. I attempted to do a weather or landscape scene based on some challenges submitted by Shania. Shania provided a list of sunset-themed prompts, and my task was to turn those into a visual interpretation.

The list of challenges:

  • Use a photo of a recent sunset, and try to recreate it using only 5-6 colours.
  • Use a sunset forecast (colours, cloud formations), and create a piece based on the predicted sunset.
  • Given 3-4 colours based on the current or upcoming weather, and must use ONLY those colours in a sunset-themed artwork.

I created an Instagram Reel to announce our collaboration and to randomly select one challenge from the three.

The Chosen Challenge: Use a photo of a recent sunset, and try to recreate it using only 5-6 colours.

Later on, a youtube video was created with a voiceover from Shania giving an explanation about sunsets. I used one of her sunset photographs.

The final result for the painting:

I think it was a hard challenge because my experience with landscapes was limited, especially with clouds. The colour-matching aspect pushed me to look closer at subtle gradients, and the limited palette made me experiment more with blending, layering, and composition. Despite the challenges, I earned +25 XP through this task, which bumped me up to Level 7 in my Creative Gamification Journey.

Overall, this collaboration was a great learning experience and we were able to work remotely and still create something that combined visual storytelling with educational insight.
