Project Wrap-Up

Creating Pixel N’ Brush for social media was a personal and creative project for a Social Media Communications course. Initially, there was so much fear and worry about posting creative content on social media. I was concerned about being consistent, and I eventually decided to do creative projects because I knew I could do that, but coming up with ideas each week seemed daunting. This led to researching gamification for creativity and ideas that could apply to my life as a full-time graphic designer and part-time student. This course taught us how social media has impacted different facets of our lives positively and negatively. I think it was a mostly productive and fun journey, and I will recap what I learned, the challenges I faced, the XP I gained, and why gamifying creativity works.

What I learned

I learnt multiple new skills for this project, but the most difficult was video editing. I learnt how to use Davinci Resolve, a free video editing software and watched a lot of tutorials to prepare myself. I also learnt more about myself and what would motivate me to be more consistent. It was rare for me to make art outside of requests, gifts, work and school projects. Setting up a system with simple rules allowed me to pick an art-related task, which earned me XP (Experience Points). There were colour-coded challenges from easy to difficult, and I wrote them on paper, folded them and stored them in a mason jar:

🟩 Easy Tasks – 5 XP

🟧 Medium Tasks – 10 XP

🟪 Hard Tasks – 25 XP

🟨 Yellow/Gold Tasks – 25 XP (collabs & community submissions)

Each week, I picked a challenge based on mood and time, recorded and tracked my progress, and shared content on YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest. My goal for this project is to reach Level 50 (500XP), but I knew I could not achieve that goal within the semester. Setting a high level will encourage me to continue with it, to be more creative and invest in my hobbies for mental health.

The Challenges I faced

Creating content for multiple social media platforms was difficult. I felt like I neglected Pinterest. It is a valuable platform for posting art content, but YouTube and Instagram took a lot more time for me to work on. I plan to clean it up and improve the content for Pinterest.

The creative challenge I enjoyed the most and really love how it turned out was the creative collaboration with Shania (@shaniabeyondthesky_). It was difficult due to my limited experience with painting clouds, and the various colours in the photograph made it look a lot more challenging. I told myself that I could always paint over a part that did not turn out well, so I worked on blending, and eventually, I was able to complete it.

The XP I Gained

By the end of the project, I reached Level 8 with 80 XP earned, which felt like a huge win considering the demands of school work, life, and consistent creativity. There is an XP counter at the top of the website.

Why Gamifying Creativity Works

Turning my creative journey into a game added structure, motivation and fun. Here’s what I learned:

  • It made the process less intimidating:
The XP jar system helped me focus on what was chosen. There was less focus on perfection and more on completing the challenge to get the XP. The small wins were motivating.
  • It helped with consistency:
Knowing I could earn XP even for smaller challenges kept me engaged. Also, there was less worry about what to do the following week since there were many challenges to choose from.
  • It allowed flexibility:
This was really important, especially for my schedule. I could choose from Easy, Medium and Difficult.
  • It made creativity feel more rewarding:
I was growing, unlocking new skills and tracking my journey visually. I can look back on what I’ve done to spark my creativity or motivation.

Running Pixel N’ Brush across multiple platforms taught me a lot about content creation, which type of content is more suited for them and time management:

  • YouTube was my primary focus. I shared longer form content of my creative process.
  • Instagram was great for more catchy content, which I am still trying to figure out.
  • Pinterest mostly helped me find inspiration and share some final artwork.
  • The blog was used to reflect more on the journey.

I gained a deeper understanding of content planning and learnt the value of repurposing content across platforms.

This project was a rediscovery for creativity, and Pixel N’ Brush gave me a structure for how to keep going. I plan to continue levelling up, experimenting with new art mediums, and sharing more content.

My Sunset Challenge Collaboration with @shaniabeyondthesky_

Recently, I did a collaboration with one of my classmates, Shania (@shaniabeyondthesky_), a weather girl who provides online daily weather forecasts via Instagram and Youtube. We wanted to try combining our interests into content and it became a concept where Art meets Weather. I attempted to do a weather or landscape scene based on some challenges submitted by Shania. Shania provided a list of sunset-themed prompts, and my task was to turn those into a visual interpretation.

The list of challenges:

  • Use a photo of a recent sunset, and try to recreate it using only 5-6 colours.
  • Use a sunset forecast (colours, cloud formations), and create a piece based on the predicted sunset.
  • Given 3-4 colours based on the current or upcoming weather, and must use ONLY those colours in a sunset-themed artwork.

I created an Instagram Reel to announce our collaboration and to randomly select one challenge from the three.

The Chosen Challenge: Use a photo of a recent sunset, and try to recreate it using only 5-6 colours.

Later on, a youtube video was created with a voiceover from Shania giving an explanation about sunsets. I used one of her sunset photographs.

The final result for the painting:

I think it was a hard challenge because my experience with landscapes was limited, especially with clouds. The colour-matching aspect pushed me to look closer at subtle gradients, and the limited palette made me experiment more with blending, layering, and composition. Despite the challenges, I earned +25 XP through this task, which bumped me up to Level 7 in my Creative Gamification Journey.

Overall, this collaboration was a great learning experience and we were able to work remotely and still create something that combined visual storytelling with educational insight.

Level 2 Completed

After I launched this gamification art project, Pixel N’ Brush, I completed 3 tasks:

1) Easy – Pick one shape and repeat it in different sizes to fill the page (5XP)

The 1st challenge was simple to do and a good warm-up for drawing. It was also relaxing to only work with one shape.

2) Medium – Draw an Art Deco-styled lighthouse from Toco (10XP)

For the 2nd challenge, it had medium difficulty and it required research for the subject and art style. I created a Pinterest board to help with reference images. The project took almost 2 hours to complete. It might be best to do the Medium and Hard challenges on weekends or once a week.

3) Easy – Colour half of the colouring page using only warm colours and the other half using cool colours (5XP)

The colouring challenge was simple, but using colouring pencils prolonged the process because I wanted the colours to appear darker. It would be nice to try colouring with markers in the future.

Level 1 Begins!

Hi! My name is Nyasha. I am a graphic designer based in Trinidad and Tobago. I am embarking on an epic quest to reach Level 50 (500 XP) for my creative journey. There will be weekly creative challenges to level up my creativity, unlock new artistic abilities, and reignite my passion for art.

Currently, for my BA in Graphic Design, there is a course called Social Media Communications, where I have to work towards a goal using social media. It took me close to 2 weeks of brainstorming, but I’ve decided to merge my love for art and creativity with the digital world. I want making art to become a regular weekly habit instead of a chore—injecting some fun and uniqueness into my creative process! There will be a mix of nostalgic hobbies and new creative activities. I am inspired by PC games, particularly Stardew Valley and role-playing games (RPGs). I’m bringing a gamified twist to this artistic journey. I’ll be completing tasks for XP, with each level requiring just 10 XP to conquer—and there will be rewards along the way!

Personal Agenda:

  • Crafting my Creative Corner online

  • Discover ways of reducing stress through creativity.

  • Discovering hobbies that seamlessly fit into my life—low stakes!

  • Indulging in the joy of leisure pursuits

According to Mark Travers (2025), 4 Ways To ‘Gamify’ Your Life And Achieve Your Goals—By a psychologist, when you gamify your life or goals, “you’re reminded that you’re the protagonist of your own life. Each goal is a quest, and each challenge is an opportunity to level up. The rewards? Personal growth, increased motivation, and the pure joy of continuous improvement.”

I am looking forward to seeing if I gain a creative routine by the end of the semester and improve any skills!
